Doula-Approved Newborn Essentials
My Doula-Approved Newborn Essentials: Low-Toxic & Gentle Favorites
As a postpartum doula, I get asked all the time: What should I actually buy for my newborn? The truth is, you don’t need a lot—but what you do use should be gentle, safe, and as low in toxins as possible. That’s why I’ve pulled together this list of my favorite newborn essentials that I not only recommend to my clients, but would use with my own little one.
These products are doula-approved, parent-tested, and baby-loved. From bath time to bedtime and every snuggle in between, these picks keep baby safe and supported while giving you peace of mind.
🛁 Bath Time Basics
Baby Wash & Lotion
Look for fragrance-free or naturally scented products made without sulfates, parabens, or synthetic dyes. I love brands that are EWG-rated and gentle enough for even the most sensitive newborn skin.
Hooded Towels & Washcloths
Soft, organic cotton is your best bet. Your baby’s skin is more delicate than ours—avoid rough or overly treated fabrics.
🍼 Feeding Must-Haves
Bottles
Glass or BPA/BPS-free plastic bottles are ideal. I recommend slow-flow nipples for newborns and options that help reduce gas and colic.
Pacifiers
Choose food-grade silicone or natural rubber pacifiers that are orthodontic-friendly. One-piece designs are safer and easier to clean.
🧺 Laundry Love
Detergent
Skip the heavy fragrance and go for plant-based, hypoallergenic detergents that are free from brighteners and dyes. Baby’s skin will thank you!
Stain Remover
Babies are adorable... and messy. Find a nontoxic spot treatment that can handle spit-up and blowouts without harsh chemicals.
👕 Clothing & Basics
Onesies, Sleepers, and Swaddles
Opt for GOTS-certified organic cotton or bamboo fabric. Zippers over snaps = lifesaver for those late-night changes.
Blankets & Burp Cloths
You’ll use these constantly. Pick breathable, washable, and durable materials.
Why Low/Non-Toxic Matters
Babies absorb more of what’s in their environment than adults do, and their systems are still developing. Choosing low-toxic products reduces their exposure to potentially harmful chemicals—something that’s especially important in the first year of life. My goal is always to help families feel empowered, not overwhelmed.
