Top 5 Comfort Measures You Can Use Now to Prepare for Labor

Bringing your baby into the world is one of life’s most powerful and transformative experiences. As a birth doula in East Texas, I’ve supported many families through this sacred season—and one thing I always emphasize is that comfort measures aren’t just for labor day. They’re tools you can start using right now to prepare your body and mind for birth.

Whether you’re planning a hospital, birth center, or home birth in Tyler or Lindale, Texas, these five comfort measures will help you feel calmer, more confident, and more connected to your body’s natural rhythm.

1. Practice Rhythmic Breathing

Breathing is one of the most powerful tools you have during labor. Deep, rhythmic breathing helps release tension, lower your heart rate, and bring oxygen to both you and your baby.
Try this simple exercise: inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four, exhale gently through your mouth for a count of six. Practice this daily, especially during Braxton Hicks contractions or moments of stress.

2. Use Gentle Movement

Your body was made to move in labor! Swaying your hips, slow dancing with your partner, or doing figure-eight movements on a birth ball can help your baby find an ideal position and keep contractions productive.
Even now, during pregnancy, these movements can ease back pain and prepare your body for birth day.

3. Apply Warmth or Cold

Heat and cold therapy can both bring incredible relief.
A warm rice sock or heating pad on your lower back or abdomen can help release tension. A cool washcloth across your forehead can help if you’re feeling flushed or overwhelmed.
Experiment with both so you know what feels best for your body.

4. Try Counter Pressure and Massage

Ask your partner to practice counter pressure—pressing firmly on your lower back or hips during contractions. This technique helps relieve the intensity of pressure and gives your partner an active role in supporting you.
Massage, even light touch, can also boost oxytocin—the “love hormone”—which helps labor progress smoothly and keeps you calm.

5. Create a Calm Environment

Your birth environment deeply influences how safe and relaxed you feel. Think of ways to make your space soothing: soft lighting, favorite scents, affirmations, and calming music.
You can even start setting up a mini “birth corner” at home to practice your relaxation techniques.
