What does a doula do during a postpartum visit? Tyler - Lindale - Longview
What Does a Postpartum Doula Do During Each Visit?
When families first hear about postpartum doula care, one of the most common questions is: “So… what exactly do you do during a visit?”
Every visit looks a little different, because my goal is always to meet your family’s unique needs in that moment. But here’s a peek into what a typical postpartum doula visit may include:
1. Check-In & Emotional Support
The very first thing I do when I arrive is ask: “How are you doing today?”
Sometimes that leads to a conversation about your birth story, last night’s sleep, or how breastfeeding is going.
I hold space for your emotions, whether you need to cry, laugh, or just talk things through.
2. Baby Care Guidance
Together we might go over newborn care basics or troubleshoot challenges such as:
Soothing and sleep techniques
Feeding support (breast, bottle, or combo)
Safe sleep setups
Helping parents feel more confident holding, burping, or bathing their baby
3. Postpartum Recovery Support
For the birthing parent, I help with:
Encouraging rest and recovery
Preparing nourishing snacks or meals (sometimes with Ayurvedic touches)
Offering tips for healing and self-care
Watching the baby so you can nap or shower
4. Practical Household Help
Many parents are surprised that a postpartum doula also helps keep the home running smoothly. I might:
Fold a load of baby laundry
Empty the dishwasher
Prep a simple dinner or snack
Keep older siblings entertained while you bond with baby
5. Referrals & Resources
If I notice something that requires extra support—like lactation, mental health, or pediatric care—I’ll connect you with trusted local resources so you’re never left feeling lost.
6. Closing the Visit
Before I leave, I always check in: “What would feel most supportive before I go today?” That way you know you’ve been heard, cared for, and set up for a smoother day (or night) ahead.
Every postpartum doula visit is tailored to your family. Some days are all about emotional support, while others are hands-on with household tasks and newborn care. The beauty of having a postpartum doula is knowing that whatever your need that day, you don’t have to face it alone.
